The enzyme diagram above displays the allosteric inhibition and activation. Enzymes regulate metabolism by altering the rate of chemical reactions. Activation energy is decreased in order to alter chemical reaction rates. The place where enzyme binds onto the substrate is called active site. A substrate is the molecule that enzyme acts upon. Take a look at the following diagram of reaction progress of enzyme catalyst.

Enzymes accelerate the rates of such reactions by well over a million-fold, so reactions that would take years in the absence of catalysis can occur in fractions of seconds if catalyzed by the appropriate enzyme. Like all other catalysts, enzymes are characterized by two fundamental properties. First, they increase the rate of chemical reactions without themselves being consumed or permanently altered by the reaction. Second, they increase reaction rates without altering the chemical equilibrium between reactants and products.
